Four years ago today, at around 5.30AM on Easter Friday, I made a career changing decision….that I would quit my well paid job with a well respected company where I’d worked for the past five years.
It was time to become self employed again, that much was apparent. However, just how that would manifest itself was anything but clear. Undeterred, I resigned the following week, effective 30 June.
As the days ticked down to that date I was experiencing equal parts excitement and apprehension. Just what exactly was my new income earning activity going to look like?
Fortunately I had some guiding words from a mentor to clarify my thinking. He suggested that I write down what my ideal scenario would be in three years time. I undertook that exercise, along with taking a holiday to clear my mind of what was and to reflect upon what might be. In a moment of clarity and confidence during that break, I resolved to trust in the Universe to deliver opportunities and to be open to what would transpire.
Shortly after returning from that vacation, I entered into a round of discussions with two colleagues from a previous role. It seemed that they too were looking for the next opportunity. The talks were fruitful and in late July 2015, Slipstream Coaching Pty Ltd was incorporated.
Fast forward four years and today Slipstream is now well and truly established as an entity which provides quality business coaching to the accounting and financial planning professions. One of the founders has left the scene but my partnership with co-director Sharon McClafferty remains rock solid.
Together we have built the business to the level to which we originally aspired. Slipstream has conducted hundreds of coaching events, worked with many practitioners and will shortly be welcoming its third full time business coach.
At that formation day back in 2015, we set a big aspiration – to receive 80 “You’ve changed my life” testimonials. I’m pleased to report that we’re currently at 18. What’s more, we are confident this number will grow significantly in the coming months.
Professionally, I am thoroughly engaged in my Director of Coaching role. Every week, I’m having significant coaching conversations with clients who I love to work with. Slipstream is also the environment where I have reached new heights of creativity, developing a significant body of coaching guides, articles, workshops, video clips, posters, podcasts and cartoons to assist our clients in achieving their goals.
Yes, it’s been hard work but Sharon and I are on a mission to empower our clients to live the life they want. We have never deviated from this objective and it drives our decision making each and every day. We are looking to the future at Slipstream with considerable optimism and purpose.
Oh yes, at the three year mark I reviewed the list I created when my future was an absolute blank. Virtually every item on that list could be ticked off. Clearly, it was time to draw up a fresh list! So too, our first coaching client has been back to our business planning workshop because the objectives in the first document had been accomplished.
Looking back, I’m so glad I followed my heart that day four years ago. It perhaps is no coincidence that one of the Slipstream values is “Be bold”. Life is indeed a journey that is all the richer for backing oneself and taking the road less travelled.
